Why "Arivu"?
The word Arivu means "knowledge" in Malayalam, a fitting name for a foundation born from a dream: to bring the gift of knowledge through education to children who cannot afford it.
Our Story
My family is originally from Kerala, India, which has deeply rooted me in the culture and the challenges many in India still face. Growing up, I watched my parents quietly and consistently give back, helping children in India through priests and nuns who would identify families in need, and funding scholarships for students who could not afford to continue their education. They did this for years, helping countless children get through school. That generosity was simply part of who they were, and it shaped how I saw the world long before I fully understood it.
In November 2020, I visited a friend whose refrigerator was covered with photos of children I did not recognize. When I asked who they were, he said, “These are my kiddos.” He explained that he was sponsoring these children through a program called 'Hope for Haiti' and helping to provide for their education. That same night, I signed up to sponsor my own child. Soon after, I received a welcome packet with a photo of the child I would be sponsoring, along with their story and future aspirations. It struck me how powerful my donation was and more importantly, how a simple act of giving can change a child's life forever.
As time passed, I began looking at my own community and wondered: Why not back home in India? I researched, and the numbers painted a stark picture:
About 47.4 million children in India between the ages of 6 and 17 remain out of school.
When I learned that, I realized the same opportunity that had been given to me to change one child’s life could be extended to so many more in India.
Around that same time, my family experienced a profound loss. My father was diagnosed with brain cancer and passed away in 2021. In his memory, a cousin of mine started a scholarship in his name for students in India for higher education who lacked financial means. That simple act inspired me deeply. By taking that moment of grief and turning it into hope for others, it proved to me that education can be a legacy and a real chance at a different future.
These two defining experiences shape and define Arivu Foundation, which follows two equally important paths:
- Monthly Child Sponsorship: supporting young underprivileged children with tuition, supplies, uniforms, and basic educational needs.
- Scholarship Support: helping underprivileged, deserving students pursue higher education while honoring loved ones through named scholarships.
My parents had something many of us in this generation no longer have: trusted connections on the ground in India who knew which families needed help and where support could make a real difference. For many of us who grew up outside of India, that network has faded, but the desire to give back has not. Arivu Foundation exists to bridge that gap, to give anyone who wants to make a difference a trusted, transparent place to do exactly that.
Our goal and vision at Arivu Foundation is to provide underprivileged children in India with access to quality education and the support they need to succeed. We believe every child deserves this opportunity, regardless of background, religion, region, or circumstance. We invite you to join us. Sponsor a child, fund a scholarship, or even simply help share our mission. Your support does not just change a child’s education, it can turn hope into action, and dreams into reality: one child, one student, and one future at a time.
